Stained Glass Windows

Installed with the present church building in the 1950s, the stained glass windows sequence generally follows the words of the Apostles’ Creed. Triangular shapes are a unifying theme, proclaiming that in all of the manifestations of God at work in creation, it is the same triune God.

1. Creation
The hand of God brings light to the globe of the earth.

2. Incarnation
Symbols attributed to the presence of Jesus in the world: INRI, the crown, and the cross.

3. Resurrection
The lily represents the new life of Jesus’ resurrection, the crown his triumph over death.

4. Judgment
The scales of God’s justice will weigh the righteousness of the world.

5. Baptism
Water pours from a shell into the waters of the earth, joining fish, an historic symbol of Christ.

6. Chi Ro
This ancient symbol superimposes the first two letters of the Greek for the name of Jesus.

7. Sanctification
The dove spreads its wings, representing the Holy Spirit’s embrace of the church and the world.

8. The Church
The ark, representing the church as the ship of salvation, is linked with entwined rings symbolizing the church in union with Christ.

9. Communion
A lighted candle, a wheat stalk, and a cruet as used for wine reflect the table around which we gather for the communion meal.

10. Forgiveness
Christ as the key by which we are freed from the shackles of sin.

11. Eternal Life
The word ‘pax’ (peace) imposed on the Chi Ro (Jesus), along with peacocks, symbolize immortality and the life of the world to come.
