Small Groups for Christian Formation and Community Building: Spring 2012

NEW FOR SPRING!

Men’s Spiritual Formation Group

Are you interested in experiencing growth and balance in your spiritual life with a small group of men in a Christ-centered program? We will be using A Spiritual Formation Workbook published by Renovare as the basis for developing regular spiritual practices within the framework of six traditional themes revealed in the life and teaching of Jesus. Shared leadership, confidentiality, and the opportunity to seek answers to heart questions in the company of kindred spirits is offered.
Time: First and third Monday evenings 7:30 – 9:00 pm

Contemplating Stewardship of God’s Planet

Is God green? Did Jesus have anything to say about the environment? What is my role as a Christian in caring for the earth? Using the Green Bible, we will explore passages (in the manner of lectio divina) that help answer these questions, and share together how these passages can guide our stewardship of the earth. We will end the evening by reading the Compline service. Please bring a prayer book or photocopy of pages 127-135.
Time: Every other Monday evening 7:00 – 9:00 pm
Dates: February 6 – May 14
Location: All Souls Chapel
(Limited to 8 participants)
Co-leaders: Jim Moloney and Leslie Watson

CONTINUING GROUPS IN THE SPRING

Listening Through Scripture

Join with us as part of a small group who read, listen, and apply God’s Word and uphold one another in prayer. As we gather, we’ll shake off our concerns of the day, open the Scripture and re-read it three times, and pray together. This repeated reading, i.e., in lectio divina style, will help the meaning sink into our hearts. Please bring your favorite Bible translation and a notebook for personal reflection.
Time:  Every other Saturday afternoon 4:00 – 5:30 pm
Dates:  February 4 – May 19
Location:  All Souls Common Room
(Limited to 6 participants)
Co-leaders:  Tony Martinez Borgfeldt and Alisa Hofmann

Companions in Transitions Small Group

The purpose of this gathering is to provide a group, place and time to share whatever transition we are going through (employment change, from being married to being single, household change for example). Our process will involve listening for what God is saying to each of us, listening to one another, reading scripture, and reflecting on what we have heard and read, and also to pray together.
Time:  First and Third Tuesday of each month 7:00 – 8:30 pm
Dates:  February 14 – May 15
Location:  All Souls Chapel
(Limited to 6 participants)
Group Leader:  Pat Jones

Music for the Soul

Are you still moved by a hymn of your childhood? Or do the newer hymns strike a chord? Come explore how the Spirit touches us through seasonal hymns while building spiritual companionship with others like you. We will do individual check-in, time to explore the hymn choice of the week through different settings, paraphrases and occasional recordings, silences for listening to the Spirit, and time to reflect back to each other what we discover. No musical ability required, just enjoyment of music.
Time:  2nd and 4th Thursdays, 7:30 – 9:00 pm
Dates:  February 9 – May 10
Location: All Souls Side Chapel (Main Church)
(Limited to 7 participants)
Leader:  Janet Armstrong

Living A Balanced Life: Exploring Benedictine Spirituality

It may seem odd that some of the best guidelines for achieving balance in our world today come from a sixth century Italian monk. We will gather to reflect on St. Benedict’s wisdom and how it can help us center ourselves in God even while we live day in and day out in a culture that may work against us, showing us how those who share our lives are part of the spiritual way. Join us for a time of sharing, reflection using Lectio Divina of Benedict’s Rule and Holy Scripture, Compline, fellowship and light refreshment.
Time:  2nd and 4th Mondays 7:00 –  9:00 pm
Dates:  February 6 – May 14
