Serving alongside each other

Why We Serve

Jesus taught his students how to love by serving alongside them.

At All Souls, we believe that putting faith into action brings us closer to God’s dream for all of creation. From gathering non-perishable items for the Berkeley food pantry to pushing for affordable housing and racial reparations, we take to heart Jesus' call to love one another through acts of service.

In addition to offering regularly occurring service opportunities, we are constantly seeking new ways to be responsive to the fluctuating needs of our local and global communities through advocacy work, educational opportunities, interfaith partnerships, and more.

We lift our voices, together

Racial Justice

“The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:31). At All Souls, we seek to follow the prophet Isaiah’s call to be, ‘repairers of the breach and restorers of the streets to live in.’ We live this out through learning, advocacy, and action.

We help to repair God’s creation

Environmental Justice

“God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I made between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow on the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.’”(Genesis 9:12-13). At All Souls we believe we are meant to be caretakers of this gift of the earth. We do this most often through Adult Formation classes on Sundays, and as advocates in collaboration with local endeavors.

We help to create safe housing

Housing Justice

“If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.” (James 2:15-17). In a world of housing injustices, we believe we are called, as Christians, to be neighbors as we strive towards being the Beloved Community.

We serve so that all can can be filled

Food Justice

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” (Matthew 25:35) For decades we have served alongside other faith communities in Berkeley, through our Open Door Dinner, our weekly collection for the Berkeley Food Pantry, Project: Sandwich, and other ways that people who are hungry can eat.
